The other plot-line concerns future Dr Who William Hartnell as soon to retire drill sergeant lumbered with trying to get a motley set of recruits to become the champion platoon after making a bet with a fellow sergeant (played by Terry Scott).

The second in the series takes place in a place which would become familiar to Carry On fans – a hospital ward. A romantic plot between a nurse and a patient (Eaton and Longdon) takes a back seat behind Hattie Jacques’ first turn as an authoritarian matron and a cast of patients reflecting a stereotypical 1950s class system. The “flower in the bum” method for taking a temperature gets an outing.

Carry On number 6 was the first to be filmed in colour (although the later releases Cabby and Spying are in black & white).

Once again Sid James’ character finds himself having to cope with a group of inexperienced officers, this time on a cruise ship, the SS “Happy Wanderer”. Lance Percival plays the ship’s cook who bakes an “international” multi-flavoured cake (ingredients include chop suey, Bombay duck, spaghetti and prunes) for a 10th anniversary party to remind the captain of all the places he’s been.

The local Burpa tribe refuse to attack the kilted Third Foot and Mouth or “the devils in skirts” because they are known to have eschewed underpants. So when an incriminating photograph comes into the possession of the Khasi of Kalabar he sees this as an opportunity to overthrow British rule in Northern India. The film climaxes with the classic attack on the British residency during a banquet.

The Khyber Pass scenes were filmed in North Wales.
